Expanding Genome Microbiology with Generative AI: Understand, Predict, and
Design
Overview
Decades of microbial genome sequencing, together with the rapid growth of
metagenomic data, have laid the foundation for understanding microbial gene
function, ecology, and evolution. Recent advances in large language models and
generative AI are now enabling models trained on vast genomic datasets to
predict unknown gene functions and sequence properties, and even to design
novel genes and genomes. What can these technologies bring to genome
microbiology? And what is needed to translate AI-driven prediction and design
into new biological discoveries about microbes? This symposium brings together leading
researchers from Japan and abroad to showcase advances at the frontier of genomics
and generative AI. Building on the knowledge and data accumulated through decades
of microbial genomics, we hope to discuss the challenges and opportunities
ahead and explore how generative AI can drive the next advances in the field.
