Technical Tour

Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region

In Hokkaido where a severe winter climate pose prominent problems peculiar to a snowy, cold region. So, the Institute has conducted advanced research for cost-effective development and maintenande of infrastructure, environment-friendly improvements to infrastructure and the mitigation of natural disaster damage.

Lunch Break

Milk Village Barbecue House  (*Homepage in Japanese only)
At Milk Village, located in Hokkaido where dairy farming is thriving, you will visit a dairy manufacturer’s factory and see cattle being raised. Here, you can enjoy “Jingisukan,” a famous local specialty of Hokkaido. The menu also includes grilled meat, sausages, and vegetables. Beer and soft drinks are available as well.

NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office Traffic Control Center

The NEXCO EAST manages expressways in eastern Japan, including Hokkaido.The Traffic Control Center collects and provides drivers with information on abnormal conditions, road conditions, and weather conditions. It also monitors and controls the operating conditions of various road and tunnel facilities 24 hours a day.

MOERENUMA PARK

MOERENUMA Park is a 1.89k㎡ urban park built on the former site of a waste treatment plant and completed in 2005. It is well known for its basic design by renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi. The Glass Pyramid in the park is equipped with a cooling system that utilizes snow.

SAPPORO Okurayama SKI JUMP STADIUM

Located about 30 minutes by car from central Sapporo, this refreshing mountain offers a breathtaking view that will make you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the city, offering a special experience that can only be experienced here.
Okurayama was also the site of the 1972 Sapporo Olympics.
Experience Japan's winter sports mecca firsthand, learn about history and experiences at one of only three Olympic museums in the country, and enjoy the views seen by ski jumpers from the observation deck.

Lunch Break

Hakkenzan Orchard Barbecue House (*Homepage in Japanese only) 
We will enjoy Jingisukan, a Hokkaido-style barbecue, at Hakkenzan Orchard, a nature-rich fruit farm located in the suburbs of Sapporo. The menu also includes grilled meat, sausages, and vegetables. Beer and soft drinks are available as well. Here, visitors can also enjoy picking cherries or strawberries during this season..

Sapporo Ainu Culture Promotion Center (Sapporo Pirika Kotran)

Sapporo Pirka Kotan means "beautiful village of Sapporo" in the Ainu language. The purpose of this facility is to allow visitors to enjoy learning about and deepen their understanding of the lives, history, and culture of the Ainu people, who have indigenous people in the northern land and have nurtured a unique culture. The exhibition room displays around 300 items, including traditional clothing and folk tools, which visitors can actually touch and look at.

Hokkaido Shrine

Hokkaido Shrine was founded in 1869 by the imperial decree of Emperor Meiji, when the Hokkaido Shrine Festival was held to enshrine the guardian deity of the frontier, as a "spiritual anchor for the pioneers." This is considered to be the founding of Hokkaido Shrine. Shima Yoshitake, a pioneer judge who designed the city of Sapporo, decided to build the shrine on the site of Maruyama, which is surrounded by mountains on three sides and opens onto plains on the other. The shrine provided spiritual support for the pioneers as they faced various hardships, and became a place where people could gather and talk.
